Product Development - Nuclear Safety Case For over two years the company has been actively supporting BAE SYSTEMS Marine Limited with the research, compilation and presentation of several different aspects of the Nuclear Safety Case for the Astute Class submarine; the next class of hunter/killer submarine being designed and built for the Royal Navy. The Reactor Plant Safety Justification provides the Safety Case for all systems and equipment that are part of, contribute to, or support the Normal, Abnormal and Emergency operation of nuclear reactor. |

Within
the Nuclear Safety Case, T&IP Ltd has undertaken work packages to
assist in the preparation of System Design Descriptions,
Safety Principles
Papers and Base Safety Reports. An integral part of that work has involved the company in detailed Hazard Assessment work (Hazards) on many different systems from cooling water and hydraulics to compressed air, steam and electrical distribution systems. Hazard Identification and Assessment have been an integral part of the work coupled with investigations for Dependent Failures in both mechanical and electrical supply systems. Additionally, a new procedure has been proposed and developed for Zonal Hazard Analysis to identify and assess the hazards that may be present, caused by the close proximity of many high energy systems in one compartment, or volumetric space. This process, in conjunction with Operability Analysis and Assessment provides the evidence that assists in demonstrating that the design of individual compartments is ALARP. The work has required the company to integrate its workforce into the structure and existing programme planning within BAE SYSTEMS Marine Limited and this approach can also be implemented for any other customer. The plan to achieve the full Safety Justification is being staged as the design matures within the concurrent engineering environment and this requires compilation of information to support Performance, Integrity and Function as well as the production of maintenance and testing policies to support the Safety Case and provide data for input into the Probabilistic Safety Assessment models. All these reports are grouped in a series of Live Files, which form the complete Reactor Plant Safety Justification. The RPSJ requires inputs from all the assessments previously identified and is a multiple report library that provides the justification for all aspects of the systems contributing to the safe operation and accident mitigation of the nuclear reactor of the Astute Class submarine. To provide transparency and visibility to the Independent Nuclear Safety Assessor and the project customer, T&IP Ltd undertook research and completed work to produce a Register of Suitably Qualified and Experienced Personnel (The SQEP Register) for BAE SYSTEMS Marine Limited, for personnel within the Astute Class submarine project. T&IP Ltd is proud to have been part of, and assisted BAE SYSTEMS Marine Limited in producing the Reactor Plant Safety Justification for the Astute Class submarine. Can we help you in a similar way? As an outcome of the Hazard Identification and Assessment work, Commissioning, Testing, Maintenance and Operating Documentation have necessarily been compiled into various documents to ensure the design intent is not compromised and to provide an auditable trail that can be followed throughout the safety case documentation. In addition to all the processes and techniques necessary to compile the nuclear safety case, skills such as Editing and Proof Reading can also be utilised for our customer's benefit. |
